Recently we visited Gyumri, but unfortunately, only 5 hours were at our disposal. We faced a difficult question: how to use these hours?
We were lucky to get acquainted with the young, energetic co-founder of the tourist company “Gyumri Tour” Gor Torosyan. Despite the fact that Gor is a historian, he and his group create various interesting tourist programs.According to the preliminary agreement, Gor met us at the central square of Vardanants.
In February 2018, Torosyan was able to organize the winter festival Winter Fest in Amasia with his own forces, without anyone’s help, on a tight budget. At present, the company has submitted to the Government a project for the creation of an eco-village. According to the plan, 18th-19th centuries style village houses should be built. Villagers will be involved in the service of tourists.Gor Torosyan belongs to the category of youth who prefer to fight and go forward, despite the unfavourable circumstances. He creates and does not cry and groan.
With the eyes of such a man, we saw Gyumri.
Sights of Gyumri:
Unfortunately, at our disposal was only 5 hours and our guide managed to show only 11 sights (it’s far from all the sights of Gyumri).
The central and the largest area of Gyumri. The fountains and a monument dedicated to the Battle of Avarayr give a special charm to the square (2008).
A number of important buildings adjoin the Vardanants square:
– Gyumri Mayor’s Office
– Church of the Holy Savior (19th century)
– the cinema “October” (1926).
The construction of the church was started in 1860 and finished in 1873. The architect is Tadevos Antikyan. Behind the church, there are more than 20 khachkars. Now the church is being reconstructed.3. THE CHURCH OF THE SEVEN WOUNDS
The Church of the Seven Wounds (1874-1886) is located on Vardanants Square. It is built out of a black stone. The official name is the church of the Holy Mother of God. Fortunately, the devastating earthquake of 1988 did not do much damage to the church.
4. ABOVYAN STREET
5. MONUMENT TO POLOZ MUKUCH
6. YARDS FROM FAMOUS FILMS
We visited two courtyards, but unfortunately, they were not well-groomed.
7. STREET OF THE MASTERS (VARPETAC)
The Street of the Masters is the visiting card of Gyumri. Here you will find the house-museums of three great residences of Gyumri; Hovhannes Shiraz, Avetik Isahakyan and Mher Mkrtchyan.
8. MONUMENT OF THE MOTHER OF ARMENIA
The monument was established in 1975 in the south-west of the city. It is the cultural and historical value of the city.
9. THE RUSSIAN CHURCH
Several thousand Russians live in Gyumri. There is also the 102nd military base and many contract soldiers live and work in Gyumri. The Russian church symbolizes the centuries-old friendship between Armenians and Russians.
10. THE BLACK FORTRESS
The Black Fortress functions as a cultural centre and is already ready to receive visitors. At present, the second floor is being reconstructed. It is assumed that there will be a hotel. At the end of the day, as a bonus, Gor invited us to taste the national cuisine. On the recommendation of the owners, we visited the Yagly House cafe, located at Ryzhkov street 6/5. A wonderful cuisine, hospitable, friendly hosts – these are the impressions of this cafe. Gyumri is a city of contrasts. There is a very fine line between grief and joy, between the new and the old, between victories and defeats. For us, Gyumri is no longer a city that is associated only with an earthquake. Gyumri is an emotional city. Gyumri is a city of struggle, hope, joy, victory.
Visit Gyumri and experience the colour of the old city and carefully preserved history.
